Switzerland is full of passes, almost the land of 'Pass Storming' and has the advantage of good transport, often up some of the passes. This high pass from the Zermatt valley over to the town of Brig is still in common use so is a great starter for those looking to get into pass storming.

Starting in Stalden, although you can start further up the valley as far as Zermatt if you have time, you take the very small cable car at the train station to Gspon. Two people and bikes can squeeze in.

From Gspon it's a long, steady climb up to the top of the pass. A mix of single and double track and a few steep bits. At the top is a overladen signpost and a lake. You can follow the signs down to Brig.

The descent is flat out all the way and takes in firetrack, dirt roads, some tight switchbacks with very steep drops to your left side and old, wooden bridge crossings above ravines. It's varied and scenic but beware of the odd vehicle on the lower part. Magnificant vistas of Valais towards the end and an excellent view of Brig.

Arriving at Brig follow the signs to the train station where you can get the train back to Stalden or as far as Zermatt.
